Frequently Asked Questions
Why should you use The Doctor Job?
If you could spend less than what you would earn in a week, and know with absolute certainty that every single physician and medical employer relevant to your job search has received your CV, why wouldn’t you?
Trying to conduct a comprehensive job search while training as a resident or fellow or working full time as a physician is almost impossible. The Doctor Job offers an effective, efficient way for you to find the exact job you're looking for in the right location.
What if I already have offers?
Even if you have an offer, you can benefit from using our services. What if there is another physician employer who is willing to pay you $25,000 more a year? Or give you more responsibility? Or a more challenging practice? Or an extra week of vacation? Or a shorter partnership track? You never know what else is available until you've searched the entire market. Don't settle for a job until you are confident you've found the best position for you!
When should I use The Doctor Job?
In most situations, the earlier you start, the better jobs you will find. We typically recommend you start your search 9-12 months before you're scheduled to finish you're residency or fellowship training. However, for certain specialties and in situations like a J-1 visa, starting 12-18 months early is also acceptable.
As a practicing physician, starting your job search about 6-9 months before you want to start work is usually sufficient time, unless you are searching in a state where licensing can take a long time. In that case, 9-12 months early would be better for your career.
Waiting until the last minute is never a good idea, and by planning ahead, you make finding the perfect job easy!
How long does the whole process take?
Our process takes 2-3 weeks. If you are one of our Gold Package clients, your letters will be mailed within two days of being finished. If you choose to mail the letters yourself, the package will take 3-5 business days to reach you, and then will take you between 2-3 weeks to mail out.
After your resumes and cover letters have been mailed out, responses from interested employers should start coming within 2-4 business days and can continue for several weeks.
How many resumes am I going to send out?
Every doctor's job search is unique. Your specialty and the geographic location you've chosen will affect the number of hiring contacts you need to reach. An average search will include between 1,000 to 2,000 resumes to be mailed. We predict a 2-4% response from interested employers for most specialties and locations.
Who do you send my resume to?
Our database creates a mailing list of every single hiring and networking contact for the type of position you are searching for. This means that anyone who could be a potential resource for your job search would be included in a mailing. The goal is to be as comprehensive as possible, which increases the chance of finding every single available job for you in that market.
We don't just contact the hospitals and groups with advertised jobs. We reach anyone who could help you in your search, including the employers with unadvertised jobs.
What is the problem with headhunters or recruiters?
Physician recruiters have less than 10% of the available jobs in the market. Typically, in popular locations, most physician employers will hire by word-of-mouth rather than advertising a position. High recruiting fees and aggressive sales tactics cause most physician employers to avoid recruiters and job boards. This means that if you limit yourself only to recruiters for your job search, you are literally missing out on 90% of the job market!
Why should I pay to find a job when recruiters do it for free?
First, it's important to remember that recruiters do not work for free. They work for the hospitals and groups who pay them. They do not work for physicians looking for jobs.
Second, we believe your time is valuable. Many physicians report spending weeks or months sifting through ads and job board sites, talking to recruiters and calling potential employers. You could spend hundreds of hours on your job search and still never find the perfect job. Investing in The Doctor Job service not only guarantees you'll find the best job available, it saves you thousands of dollars and countless hours in wasted time and earning potential.
Most importantly, The Doctor Job works. A recruiter might work. Networking on your own may produce the right job. Hiring The Doctor Job for your career search provides you with guaranteed results in a short amount of time.
