  Finding a job in Ohio

As someone who grew up in the Midwest, I’m a bit partial to its many charms.  And I’m not alone.  As the cost of living continues to rise in such areas as New York, Florida, and California, more and more people are relocating to the Midwest region.  It might not be as exciting or glamorous as, let’s say, the Big Apple, but the region remains compelling and attractive for doctors looking to practice in either a quaint country setting or even a bustling city environment.

The state of Ohio offers both options and is a renowned center for health care due to several influential hospitals located in the northeast region of the state.  For example, the Cleveland Clinic is ranked among the top three health care systems in the country and houses its world headquarters and main campus in (you guessed it) Cleveland.   Additionally, the University Hospitals of Cleveland facilities includes the Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, which is ranked as one of the top ten children's hospitals in the United States.  And nearby Cincinnati is home to the leading research center in the state for childhood diseases—Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

While it’s certainly important to find a setting that caters toward your professional ambitions, it’s always nice to find a place that caters toward your lifestyle as a whole.  For the doctor who enjoys lakeside living, northern Ohio is an attractive destination boarding the Great Lake Erie and offering everything from bike trails to history museums to light house tours.  And of course, there are plenty of local spots for the fishing expertise.  Sound interesting?  Check out the website, www.coastalohio.com, for a more detailed look at coastal Ohio living.

If you would rather spend your weekend sitting at the stadium versus canoeing in the lake, fear not, Ohio has something for you as well.  The first all-professional sports team was actually founded in Ohio—the Cincinnati Red Stockings formed in 1869.  Since then, Ohio has become home to several professional sports teams:

  • Major League Baseball: the Cincinnati Reds & the Cleveland Indians
  • National Basketball Association: the Cleveland Cavaliers
  • National Football League: the Cincinnati Bengals & the Cleveland Browns
  • Major League Soccer: the Columbus Crew
  • National Hockey League: the Columbus Blue Jackets
As you can see, Ohio offers a diverse backdrop for a physician’s practice.  Rather you prefer small towns (where you know the paper boy by name) or bustling cities (like Cleveland or Cincinnati), Ohio remains an attractive option for those seeking the very best in job opportunities—and who, like myself, are drawn to Midwestern charm.
